TKRP presents LIFE THROUGH MUSIC
A song review by Sean “DINK” Flemming for Outsyde the Box Media

Tai Rotan invites you on an odyssey of the mind with “Life Through Music”. The twenty-one instrumental tracks captivate the ear with its cinematic layers and epic sound. Rotan successfully submits a versatile and inventive fusion of funk, techno, soul, jazz, R&B, and hip-hop elements. The collection is truly a new wave classic, a piece of synthesized heaven.

The 1st cut, Cosmos, sounds like the instrumental dream sequence of award winning songstress, Sade. Tai describes the creation of this track by stating that his body was on Earth, but his mind and spirit were amongst the stars. The drums and cymbals sound and feel like a tornado in a bottle as it mesmerizes and draws you in.

Track #2 entitled Keep The Faith (Friday 3:16PM), begins with a message from the late, great Eric Rotan (to whom the CD is dedicated). When asked about the message and the impact his father had on the structuring of his music and this project, Rotan replied, “What is significant about this instrumental is that my number one critic never got a chance to hear it. That day, I looked at the caller ID and thought...its dad, I’ll talk to him later...he died later that day. Many people touched by my dad’s message don’t understand that these were his last words to me. I am so blessed to be able to preserve these last words in time.” Tai believes his father’s spirit will live eternally through his music and that the project embodies the years of advice his dad gave on composing quality, structurally sound songs. You are immediately pulled into what feels like a long percussion powered ride in plush leather seats.

The energy of Morning Theme, the 3rd song sounds like the dawning of a new day. Rotan hopes this song will reverberate through your day, reminding you of your true peaceful nature. The infectious banter of piano and bass guitar grabs you by the eardrum and never lets it go.

Blind Observer is the 4th piece and is a symphony of sound that leaves your mouth watering for more. Rotan does not disappoint.

Track #5, Celebrate, entices the senses and according to the producer, represents the correlation between being alive and motion. The smooth bass line hypnotizes you and drops you in a delightful, light-hearted musical labyrinth.

The melodic existentialism continues with Life Is What You Make It, the CD’s sixth offering. Tai’s rocket ship takes flight and delivers a psychedelic compilation of sounds, a la USS Enterprise.

Guitar driven, hip hop-soul makes Track #7, SummerTime, linger within your frontal lobe. The thick melody oozes from beginning to end and shows the range of this talented young producer.

If midnight had a soundtrack, it would be Track #8 of “Life Through Music” which is entitled Chains Pt. 2. Already used as the grand finale track for hip hop heavy hitters Dead Prez + The Outlawz album entitled Can’t Sell Dope Forever, the composition is dark and methodical enough to soothe the savage beast.

Deep and cleansing are the waters of H2O, the 9th song on the disc. A steady bass line and chimes submerged in ocean waves give you the steady rhythm of Atlantis.

Composed soon after receiving the news of his father’s passing, Rotan continues to provide the proof for the groove theory with Life Through Music, the 10th cut, beautifully blending Wurlitzer and piano riffs.

On Track #11, Autobahn, Tai plays matchmaker and lays down what can only be described as a monogamous relationship between hip hop and techno.

There is a ghost in the machine on Track #12, Chill. The specter sweetly strums the bass and delivers a supernatural reverb.

The 13th song is called Noble. The producer unites wind and string in perfect harmony as you ascend to syncopated paradise. A quiet storm is brewing two-thirds of the way through “Life Through Music”.

The hand clapping and finger snapping soul commences once again on Let’s Go Go..., #14 of the disc.

Rotan invites you to lie down and relax for some hypnotherapy on the CD’s 15th joint, entitled Passion. The cosmic piano relaxes and subliminally suggests an addictive nodding of the head.

The upbeat pace of the 16th song, Fantasy, beckons you from your slumber and you feel refreshed and rested, ready to let the ecstatic drum kick bounce you from ear to ear.

Synergy is achieved on XTC, as techno elements are blended with a funky soul sound.

The bass guitar is once again the doctor on call with Searching, as Tai prescribes your outpatient treatment with the 18th track.

With Made 4 Singing, a strong and potent piano sings steadily as the ride winds to a close on #19.

Track #20, accurately titled Positivity, is a spoken word interlude describing the creative atmosphere of the TKRP studio.

Golden, the 21st and final cut on the disc sums up the young producer’s effort on this, his first outing. This bass heavy feast for the ears sounds like sweet victory.
